Wilderness First Aid
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
To help trip leaders and would-be leaders get the required First
Aid certificate, the Chapter sponsors a First Aid class each
quarter, based on a nationally recognized first aid text, but with
added material and emphasis on wilderness situations with no
phone to dial 911. The next First Aid classes will be Saturday,

Outdoor Activities Training
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Outdoor Activities Training Committee, in conjunction with
the Outing Department, will run a two-day Outdoor Leadership
Workshop from the evening of Friday, June 2 to midafternoon on
Sunday, June 4, 2000 at Briones Regional Park in the East Bay.
The goals of the workshop are to learn and enhance leadership
skills, bring people and programs together to share and exchange
ideas, to recruit new outdoor leaders, to learn what it takes to lead
for other programs of the Sierra Club, and of course to have a lot
of FUN.
For anyone who may be interested in the details send me an email
and I will forward your name to National (Susanna Drayne).
Specifically, we hope that you will help us identify persons in the
following areas:
? Instructors/facilitators to lead specific sessions.
? Volunteers for other tasks, such as coordinating meals and
transportation.
? List of people you think would benefit from this weekend.
The official invitation, with more details about the weekend, will
follow in several weeks, after we hear from you and other
program chairs. Your input at this stage is vital to the attendance
and content of the weekend.
If you have any questions, comments or suggestions regarding the
workshop or the training initiative in general feel free to contact
me. Along with handling this weekend, I have come aboard to
coordinate the program-wide training efforts of outdoor leaders.
Please return them to me at the address above no later than March
29. We need to contact the individuals in a timely manner .

Hike with us, as Pat and Aaron Lead Our Lively Adventure.
June at North Lake Tahoe is the greenest time in the greenest
place in the Sierra Nevada. We're taking a couple of moderately
paced day hikes under the pine canopy to two not very big peaks
with gorgeous lake views. Send us your own expansion of the
acronym L.O.L.A., and you too can be part of the Legend Of Low
Altitude.

Granite Chief & Mt. Rose - March 11,12
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Planning to hike up to Mt. Rose on Saturday, we were
disappointed by a mostly cloudy sky as we drove into the Tahoe
area Saturday morning. Granite Chief had caught my attention on
a previous trip to Tinker Knob, so we decided to climb that
instead since it is a bit lower and hopefully would be out of the
clouds.
Thanks to previous trip reports for noting that the trail starts
behind the Squaw fire station - we started snowshoeing from there
but quickly lost the trail and stayed to the right of the ski area.
The powder was very thick and the going was very slow. The
gullies had running water and tall walls of snow on their sides
until ~7500 feet, also slowing progress. We edged closer and
closer to the ski area as we ascended, eventually reaching a
snowgroom machine trail, which we followed for half a mile to
get some relief from the powder. When we reached the upper part
of the ski area, we again stayed to the right of the boundary and
eventually found ourselves atop Granite Chief. Many skiers had
hiked up there from the top of the ski lift and it was fun to watch
them ski down the steep slopes (a cliff jump at the beginning).
Although the summit remained in the clouds all day, they lifted
enough for a few seconds at a time to eventually give us a view in
all directions. The view of snow-free Lake Tahoe amid the white
slopes was stunning. Not a wilderness experience, but it was a
scenic area and the powder made it quite a workout.
We climbed Mt. Rose on Sunday, starting at the meadow near the
high point of the road. It is not completely obvious how to find
the winter trail along what in the summer is a road that leads to
the base of Mt. Rose. Huge snowbanks (~10 feet) along the road
obscure the path, but if you head uphill as much as possible once
you start hiking through the meadow you will quickly reach it.
We made the mistake of heading too far northwest, hiking parallel
to the road until we finally reached it. The powder in the area was
murderously soft and deep, so it was a relief to hike along the
heavily used (snowshoers, skiers, and snowmobile) trail.
We should have continued following the trail/road as it descends
~200 feet and then climbs a gully to the base of Mt. Rose.
However, I thought that it would be easier to hike up to the ridge
north of the road and then head in the direction of Mt. Rose. We
expected that the ridge would have more solid, windblown snow.
WRONG!
Getting up to the ridge took almost an hour and then we spent an
hour walking/sinking along the ridge top, only to descend to the
same place that we could have reached by following the
snowmobile tracks. Oh well. If reaching the peak quickly is your
objective, follow the course of the summer trail - it loses only 200
feet instead of ~600 down from the ridge. We both had MSR
snowshoes on, and even though we weigh 150 pounds, bigger
snowshoes would probably have worked better in such thick
powder.
Another hour of excruciatingly deep and thick powder (have I left
out any ambiguity about how much I enjoyed it?) brought us to
within 400 feet of the summit, which were almost completely
snow free. Never before have I been so happy to walk on loose,
sandy scree! Despite the slog to get there, the summit had a
beautiful view in all directions and let us temporarily forget about
the 5 more miles of sinking that awaited us on the even-softer
afternoon snow.

Private trips may be submitted directly to the Scree Editor, but are
not insured, sponsored, or supervised by the Sierra Club. They are
listed here because they may be of interest to PCS members.
*** Waddell Beach to Saratoga Gap/Highway 35 Parking Lot
Date: May 13, 2000
Time: Before Daylight
Contact: Joan Marshall (jmarshal@legato.com or eves. 408-972-8222)
Claire Marshall (clairem14@excite.com)
Bonnie Ruesch bruesch@worldnet.att.net
Bob Suzuki (408-259-0772 rsuzuki@dsptlg.com)
Details: Rated 6E, 28 miles, approx. 4,500 ft. elevation gain
Hike may take 12 hours, depending on how much lollygagging
goes on.
Many of you have done this hike downhill, but how about UPHILL?
Some of us crazies would like to try it. We will need help and
planning to make it work
Also, we need shuttle rs to take people to Waddell Beach in the
morning, and shuttle them back in the evening. Leaders are
working on some sort of reimbursement, but right now the reward
is good Karma.
All participants must sign up, and be experienced day hikers.
*** Spring Split Break
Peaks: Split Mtn (14,042), Mt Prater (13,471)
Rating: "Class 3" snow, ice axe & crampons; no rope
Dates: Sat-Sun, May 13-14
Contact: Steve Eckert, eckert@climber.org
Get high this spring! People seem to like the 14ers, so I've agreed
to go back to Red Lake (10500) and bag Split from the east side.
We should have steep hard snow, not the rubble you'll find here in
the summer, so you must be comfortable with self arrest and
crampon techniques.
If time allows, we'll get Prater on the way back from the saddle
between them. If you haven't been to Prater, beware the 10' knife
edge that pushes the Class 2 rating.
*** Mt. Shasta - Bolam Glacier
Peak: Mt. Shasta 14,162ft. glacier travel
Date: May 27-29
Contact: George Van Gorden 408 779 2320 evenings before 8:30
co-contact Bill Kirkpatrick 408 293 2447 evenings after 8:00
We will be climbing Mt. Shasta from the north side via the Bolam
Glacier. We will be roped together because this is a real glacier.
Knowledge of crevasse rescue as well as experience with
crampons and ice ax and self-arrest will be necessary.
*** Feather Peak
Peak: Feather Peak (13,242 ft.), Class:4 snow
Date: May 27-29
Contact: Kai Wiedman, (650)347-5234
Feather Peak is a striking landmark dominating the Royce Lakes basin.
As a climbers' peak, known not only for its isolation but for
itsdifficulty by any route, it has earned the respect of many a
Sierraclimber. We will attempt the North Couloir featured in the
book "Sierra Classics."
*** Mt Shasta
Peak: Mt. Shasta 14,162 ft.,Class: 2/snow
Date: June 3-4
Contact: Kai Wiedman (650)347-5234
Co-Contact: Cecil Anison cecilann@earhlink.net
Mt. Shasta is a climbers' mountain, singular in its magnificence.
Sargent's Ridge will be an airy, challenging route with steep
traverses and mixed climbing. Please join us on this exhilarating
adventure.
*** Where is Mt. Powell?
Peaks: Mt. Thompson (13,494), Mt. Powell (13,360), class-2 snow
Dates: Sat-Sun, June 10-11
Maps: Mt. Thompson, Mt. Darwin (W)
Contact: Ron Karpel, ronny@karpel.org,
Bob Suzuki, bobszk@bigfoot.com, (H)408-259-0772 (W)510-657-7555 X223
Not only the SPS and the USGS disagree about the location of the
"real" summit of Mt. Powell, the USGS itself changed it's mind a
few times in the previous millennia. So, where is Mt. Powell?
come and help us find out. There are 3 summits to chose from,
and if you know Bob, he will probably make us climb all 3. As for
me, I just have my eyes on the snow couloir on it's northern slop.
As for Thompson, it's the higher mountain, but it is overshadow by
it's wandering neighbor. We will have to climb it simply because it
is there. Ice axe and crampon experience required.
*** Darwin
Peak: Darwin (13,830) Class 3-4
Date: July 1-4
Contact: Chris Kramar (510)-796-6651
Darwin, king of the Evolution crest, is one of the finest summits in
the Sierra. Walter Starr, Jr. wrote that the Evolution country was
"the region where the grand crescendo of the Sierra touches at
once the heart of the mountaineer and the artist."
We will start at North Lake and take the Lamarck Col route to
Darwin Canyon to position ourselves at the foot of the glacier.
Expect snow and rock travel that may be roped at times. Mt.
Mendel will also be attempted.
*** South Lake/Bishop Pass
Peak: Mt. Goode, Gilbert, Johnson Black Giant, Mt. Solomons, and Mt. Goddard
Date: July 1-4
Contact: Tim Hult 408-970-0760, Timdhult@aol.com
This trip will get us into an area loaded with class 2 and 3 peaks.
Expect long days and miles. Early season conditions may require
ice axe and crampons. Extensive snow coverage may turn this
into a ski trip!
*** The Isherwood Special
Peaks: Mt. Rose (10,776) with optional climb of Mt. Tallac (9,735)
Dates: July 7-9, 2000
Leaders: Bill and Dana Isherwood
dana@isherwoods.net (925)254-0739 (h) or (925)423-5058 (Bill at work)
Climb Mt. Rose, Tahoe Basin's third highest peak, and leave your
sleeping bag, tent, backpack, etc. at home. Join us for a decadent
weekend at the private Carmel Ski Lodge in Truckee. Spend Friday
and Saturday nights at the Lodge. Climb Mt. Rose Saturday and
celebrate your ascent at a fun filled "happy hour", followed by a pot
luck barbeque, and your favorite climbing videos Saturday night.
Optional climb of Mt. Tallac on Sunday. Limited to 12. Cost:
$15/person/night (private rooms for couples). For reservations, call
Bill or Dana Isherwood .
*** San Benito County Peaks
Peaks: Laguna Mountain and other San Benito County Peaks
Date: No set date
Contact: Bill Hauser, 408-243-4566
Bill Hauser is looking for people to climb San Benito County Peaks.
*** Khumbu region of Nepal
Peak: Island Pek or Mera Peak
Date: Oct-Nov 2000
Contact: Tim Hult 408-970-0760, Timdhult@aol.com
Four week trip into a spectacular and storied region of the
Himalaya. These are "minimal" trekking peaks open to qualified
class 3 peak baggers with snow experience. Views of Everest
and all those places you've heard about. Experience and
compatibility with groups on long "wilderness" trips a must.
*** Argentina - January 2001
Peaks: A Seven Summit Mountain
Aconcaqua 6959 m
Contact: Warren Storkman, 650-493-895
*** Denali
Peak: Denali, 20,320 ft.
Date: May-June 2001
Contact: Tim Hult 408-970-0760, Timdhult@aol.com
Been there twice but unfortunately haven't done it yet as weather
and sickness (the flu) have kept me off the summit. Third time a
charm? Looking for qualified partners for this major, no nonsense
peak. Must have extensive experience in the following: high
altitude climbing (18,000 ft +), excellent winter camping skills and
equipment, proven ability to get along with partners on a multi-
week trip. Ice climbing and crevasse rescue will be taught if
required. Prefer those with the ability to ski or willingness to learn
how to ski with a pack on - need NOT be an expert! Serious
inquires only.
